Write Your Personal Apology ↗A STARTING POINT, NOT A SCRIPT
Words you can make your own.
Replace the details with what actually happened. Keep only promises you can follow through on.
01 / For a comment about appearance
My comment about your appearance was unkind and unnecessary. I am sorry. I will not make that subject into a joke again.
02 / For dismissing a choice
I spoke about your decision as if it was mine to judge. I am sorry. I can disagree without belittling you.
03 / For a public remark
I made the remark in front of others. I am sorry for putting you in that position. I can correct it briefly if that would help, without repeating the insult.
A remark about someone’s body, work, relationship or preferences can feel personal even when you intended to tease. Your apology needs to own the comment and stop the pattern. It should not become a speech about why she misunderstood your humor.
01Refer to the subject without restating the insult
You can say “the comment about your appearance” rather than quoting every hurtful word again. Be specific enough that she knows what you mean. If the remark was made publicly, acknowledge the embarrassment you know you caused without claiming to know every feeling she had.
02Take intention out of the defense position
You may not have intended harm, but a sentence about your intention should not erase the comment. “I thought I was being funny” can explain the mistake if followed by responsibility. Avoid “you know I did not mean it,” which asks her to do the work of excusing it for you.
03Do not repair comparison with another comparison
If you compared her with someone else, do not now announce that she is the better one. That keeps the same measuring system in place. Respect her own choices and stop treating the topic as public entertainment. The useful change may simply be keeping unsolicited judgments to yourself.

04Ask before a public correction
If other people heard the remark, a brief correction may be appropriate. Check whether a larger discussion would embarrass her further. You do not need a performance of regret. A plain correction and a consistent change in what you say can be more considerate.
FROM WORDS TO ACTION
Before you send it.
- 01
Identify the comment’s subject.
- 02
Remove the demand that she accept your intention.
- 03
Stop the specific comparison or joke.
- 04
Check before a wider correction.
A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
Questions worth asking.
Should I repeat the exact words in the apology?
Only if needed for clarity. A brief reference to the comment is usually enough without exposing her to the insult again.
Is saying it was a joke enough?
No. Explain that the comment was unfair and what you will stop doing.
A THOUGHTFUL NEXT STEP
You don’t need perfect words.
You need honest ones.
Take what is useful. Add your truth. Let your next actions support the apology.
