Write Your Personal Apology ↗A STARTING POINT, NOT A SCRIPT
Words you can make your own.
Replace the details with what actually happened. Keep only promises you can follow through on.
01 / For a younger son
I said we would play together and then did not come back to it. I am sorry I left you waiting.
02 / A realistic new plan
I can give you my attention at [time]. Does that work for you, or would you prefer another time?
03 / For a repeated mistake
I have made this promise before and missed it. I need to check my schedule before saying yes, instead of expecting another apology to fix it.
A promised activity may have been an important part of his day. Avoid dismissing it as only a game or outing. Acknowledge the plan you offered and the uncertainty or disappointment caused by not following through.
01State the promise in concrete terms
For a younger child, name the activity and time: “I said we would read after dinner.” An older son may need an explanation of the arrangement you did not keep. Do not expect him to infer the apology from a new invitation. Say that the earlier commitment was missed.
02Explain circumstances without asking him to carry them
If something changed unexpectedly, give a short truthful explanation. Avoid burdening a child with adult worries or making him reassure you that work is more important. You can say the plan changed while still acknowledging that you should have told him sooner where possible.
03Offer a replacement he can understand
Give a realistic time and check that it fits. If the original moment cannot be recreated, acknowledge that instead of saying the new plan is exactly the same. A gift does not automatically replace shared attention. Choose something connected to the original experience, if he would welcome it.

04Promise less carelessly next time
Check availability before making a commitment. Use your own reminder rather than asking him to keep reminding you. If you cannot guarantee a plan, explain the uncertainty before he organizes his expectations around it. Reliability is more useful than a promise that you will never miss anything again.
FROM WORDS TO ACTION
Before you send it.
- 01
Name the activity and agreement.
- 02
Explain a change briefly.
- 03
Offer a realistic replacement.
- 04
Manage your own reminders.
A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
Questions worth asking.
Should I buy something to make up for the missed time?
A gift is optional and should not replace acknowledging the promise. Ask what would be useful or enjoyable now.
What if an emergency caused the change?
Explain honestly at an appropriate level. You can acknowledge the disappointment without pretending the emergency was a choice.
A THOUGHTFUL NEXT STEP
You don’t need perfect words.
You need honest ones.
Take what is useful. Add your truth. Let your next actions support the apology.
